Celtic knotwork traces an unbroken path without beginning or end. The knot is characteristic of Celtic jewelry and book decoration. Knotwork has it's origins in the plait motifs of the La Tene culture which was from about 500bc to the middle ages. The suggestion of human, animal, or plant form might be achieved through curing, swirling lines of marvelous ingenuity and delicacy. Intricate Knotwork continued to develop mainly in Ireland. The Knotwork designs reached their peak in the 7th to the 9th centuries.
