The Celts were masters of knotwork designs using many animals including dogs, birds such as the eagle, and snakes to form fantastic designs. This type of animal motif is known as zoomorphic designs.
The Celtic people thought of the Eagle as a fearsome bird, noted for wisdom and long life.
The Celtic eagle represents swiftness, strength, keen sight and nobility. The eagle is also the symbol of Saint Matthew. Some of the illuminated letters in the Book of Kells are in the shape of eagles. The Book of Kells is probably the most famous source for Celtic Art.
