Celtic knotwork traces an unbroken path without beginning or end. The knot is characteristic of Celtic jewelry and book decoration. Knot work has its origins in the plait motifs of the La Tene culture which was from about 500bc to the middle ages. The suggestion of human, animal, or plant form might be achieved through curing, swirling lines of marvelous ingenuity and delicacy. Intricate knot work continued to develop mainly in Ireland. The knot work designs reached there peak in the 7th to the 9th centuries.
